And though Harut remained convinced that Alex was lying, nevertheless he was shocked: what if Alex didn't lie? He was shocked to think that Nelly could cheat on her husband.
They reached Jeff's house.
"Hey listen, Harut. I forgot. I also need to wash my clothes. Haven't done my laundry since we came to America. Do you know where's the nearest laundry?"
Harut was still preoccupied.
"Wake up, man! I need some quarters for the washing machine and the dryer. Can you break a dollar?"
"No," said Harut after a pause, "I got only dimes and nickels."
The next day Harut and Anna went to work at the beachwear store as it was agreed the previous day. They had to be there on time.
And they made it. The manager gave them time cards;8 they clocked in and started to work. The duties were not too difficult at first. They just had to walk around an assigned section, pick up the T-shirts on the floor, keep an eye on customers so that they didn't steal anything and things like that.
For about an hour Harut and Anna could see each other in the store, though it was very large. But then came the assistant manager and took Harut to the back of the store. He had to move some empty boxes. "Carrying rocks, that’s what it is," thought Harut to himself while moving the empty, sometimes even badly damaged cardboard boxes.
